Gorgias AI Pricing for Shopify: Why Automation Does Not Replace Your Ticket Bill
Gorgias AI resolved half of your Shopify store's tickets last month, and the helpdesk bill did not shrink. How is one automated conversation counted, and when is the AI worth it?

- Gorgias's current billing model can count a fully automated conversation against both helpdesk usage and AI usage. Automating half your tickets does not mean buying half the helpdesk allowance.
- Most plans list an AI interaction rate of $0.90 on annual billing or $1 on monthly billing. Your package allowance, overage rate and helpdesk subscription still determine the invoice.
- Gorgias offers the most value when it completes Shopify order actions that staff would otherwise perform. Answering FAQs saves less work if staff still handle refunds, cancellations and follow-up.
One AI-resolved ticket can count toward both helpdesk and AI usage
Under the current model, a shopper's issue fully handled by AI can create a billable helpdesk ticket and an additional automated interaction. Gorgias counts the ticket and the AI interaction separately. AI replaces some of the human work on that ticket while the ticket still counts toward helpdesk usage.
This is the detail to settle before estimating Gorgias AI pricing. Gorgias's billing guide distinguishes today's model from legacy subscriptions. Some older accounts use a different either-or arrangement. A review written about that arrangement will give a new customer the wrong arithmetic.
A Shopify merchant with roughly 1,500 monthly tickets and 300–500 calls was evaluating the cost of about 400 AI resolutions. Pricing that workload requires separate allowances and rates for helpdesk tickets, AI interactions and voice calls.
Which replies create a charge?
| Event | Helpdesk ticket usage | Additional AI automation usage |
|---|---|---|
| A message arrives and nobody replies | Arrival alone does not establish a billable replied ticket | No completed automation merely from arrival |
| A person sends a customer-facing reply | Counts as a billable ticket | No AI resolution merely from the human reply |
| A Rule sends a customer-facing acknowledgement | Can make the ticket billable | An acknowledgement alone is not proof of completed automation |
| AI resolves the issue without human involvement during the qualifying window | Counts against ticket usage | Counts as an automated interaction |
| AI needs a person to take over instead of resolving the issue | The replied ticket remains billable | No completed AI automation on that basis |
| An internal note or tag is added | Not a customer-facing reply | Not an AI resolution |
The official guide uses a 72-hour no-human-involvement condition for automated interactions. A conversation that looked closed after five minutes is not necessarily a settled billing event. The same guide treats Voice and SMS as separately subscribed products with their own usage.
To understand a charge, identify the reply that made the helpdesk ticket billable, the event that qualified as automation and whether a person became involved within the qualification window. If a conversation reopens later, review when the replies and handoff occurred before deciding how they count toward each type of usage.
Calculate base fees and overages for each package separately
The current official pricing information lists most-plan AI rates of $0.90 per interaction on annual billing and $1 on monthly billing. The AI pricing explanation also distinguishes Starter and plan-specific overage conditions. Those figures do not supply the missing helpdesk and AI package details for your account.
Use this budget structure:
Monthly total = helpdesk base
+ replied-ticket overages
+ AI package base
+ automated-interaction overages
+ subscribed Voice and SMS costs Subtract each package's included usage only from its own meter. Do not subtract AI resolutions from replied-ticket usage unless your actual contract uses the legacy arrangement.
| Completed AI interactions | Value at $0.90 each | Value at $1 each | What this does not include |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 | $360 | $400 | Helpdesk base, package allowances and overage terms |
| 750 | $675 | $750 | Voice, SMS and ticket overages |
| 1,500 | $1,350 | $1,500 | Tax and the cost of remaining human work |
These are unit-price multiplications, not package quotes. They show the scale of the AI line item. For the payable invoice, replace the arithmetic with your contracted base, allowance and excess-usage rate.
Consider a store with 1,500 replied tickets, 750 of them completed by AI. Under dual-meter billing, budget for 1,500 replied tickets in the helpdesk package and 750 automated interactions in the AI package. Buying helpdesk capacity for only the 750 human-handled tickets leaves the 750 AI-handled tickets out of the estimate.
Peak shopping weeks can increase both ticket and AI overages
Model one ordinary month and one peak month separately. A promotion can increase order-status questions, cancellations and shipping complaints at the same time. If AI handles the increased traffic, automation usage rises. If its messages make more conversations billable, ticket usage rises too.
For a planning example, doubling replied tickets from 1,500 to 3,000 while maintaining a 50% automation share produces 1,500 AI interactions. That is a workload assumption for a budget, not a forecast of Gorgias performance. Place both volumes into the quote before deciding whether a larger package or occasional overages make more financial sense.
Review automatic acknowledgements separately. Removing an acknowledgement can change when a ticket becomes billable, but disabling useful communication to save a fee can also increase customer uncertainty. Remove unnecessary replies and duplicated work while retaining messages that customers need.
Completed order actions determine how much staff time AI saves
Gorgias's commerce fit is the important distinction from a generic FAQ bot. Its product explanation describes connected actions around cancellations, returns and subscriptions. For a store, answering a question and actually completing an approved order action have different value.
Define the action's permitted inputs and stopping conditions before enabling it. A cancellation request inside your policy window should not be treated like a request after fulfillment. A refund requiring approval should not be converted into an unrestricted automated promise. Your acceptance test should inspect the order state after the interaction, not just the wording of the answer.
For each category of automated work, record the intended action, whether it happened, whether the shopper contacted you again and the staff time still required. If the bot saves a reply but your team still reads every ticket and performs every order edit, the time saved may be too small to justify the additional AI cost.
Confirm the billing model, allowances, overages, channel costs and renewal terms
- The exact billing model attached to the account: current or legacy.
- Helpdesk base, replied-ticket allowance and ticket overage rate.
- AI package base, automation allowance and AI overage rate.
- Voice and SMS subscriptions and how their billable events are counted.
- The renewal arrangement and the plan needed for mandatory access controls.
Include required security controls when requesting the plan and renewal terms. Gorgias's Enterprise description lists controls such as SSO and audit logs. Budget for the plan that includes the controls you need before procurement. Review its AI security FAQ and data-processing agreement alongside the price sheet to assess security and data-processing terms.
When time saved by AI justifies the additional cost
Buy it when your Shopify workload contains repeatable, authorized actions that the system can complete and your trial shows materially less human work. Compare the value of that saved staff time with the additional automation cost, and keep the remaining helpdesk ticket charges in the total budget. A well-written demo answer alone does not establish that the purchase will pay for itself.
Will AI reduce my billable helpdesk tickets?
Not automatically under the current dual-meter model. A fully AI-resolved ticket can still consume helpdesk usage.
Is every incoming email a billable ticket?
No. The customer-facing reply is central to the helpdesk definition; arrival alone is not enough.
Should I use an old review's monthly price?
Use the current account's plan and billing model. In particular, do not carry legacy either-or billing into a current dual-meter quote.
