Apple Opens Multiseat Subscriptions to Businesses and Schools

A school can now buy app subscription seats in one purchase and hand them out through device management. Does that come with a group price, and what do developers check first?

Apple Opens Multiseat Subscriptions to Businesses and Schools
TLDR
  • Businesses and schools can buy subscription seats together and assign them through device management.
  • Existing subscriptions need a check of StoreKit 2, Family Sharing, and purchase settings.
  • Disabling multiseat purchases and removing an organization storefront have different renewal consequences.

Organization purchases are live; consumer groups come later

Apple launched volume subscription purchasing on October 22 for organizations using Apple Business or Apple School Manager. They can buy the seats they need in one purchase and distribute access with existing device management tools.

Consumer group purchases follow later: sandbox testing starts in November, ahead of a planned winter launch.

Check the subscription, not just the announcement

Apple's purchase-options documentation identifies an exception for subscriptions created before September 14, 2026: those without StoreKit 2 or with Family Sharing enabled default to opted out. Settings previously changed by the developer are preserved.

Inspect Purchase Options for seat and storefront settings. Apple's Family Sharing documentation adds another distinction: only the group purchaser can share access with family; additional seats are individual.

Volume purchasing does not automatically create a discount

In Apple's WWDC26 session, the default is the existing subscription price for each seat. Developers can configure up to five volume-price bands. The discount is a pricing decision, not an automatic benefit of buying together.

Turning off seats differs from removing a storefront

Disabling multiseat purchases stops new multiseat sales and additions to existing groups. Existing subscriptions keep renewing until the purchaser cancels, and seats can still be removed.

Removing Apple Business or Apple School Manager availability instead ends affected subscriptions at their next renewal.
