What Makes Apple’s Security Research iPhone Different?

Apple lends researchers an iPhone that runs custom kernels and keeps its tools after a restart. Who qualifies before applications close October 30, and what does the loan require?

What Makes Apple’s Security Research iPhone Different?
TLDR
  • The Security Research Device provides privileged access for investigating iOS.
  • Its research execution policies are separated from ordinary consumer iPhones.
  • Applications close October 30, 2026; approval, loan conditions and reporting requirements apply.

Research access without first defeating the protections

Apple’s Security Research Device, or SRD, is a specially configured iPhone that exposes shell access, researcher-selected entitlements and kernel customization. The program is designed to let researchers investigate iOS without first bypassing its security features.

This is a distinct hardware configuration, not a setting that turns a retail iPhone into an SRD. Apple’s Platform Security documentation describes research-specific iBoot and kernel policies that will not run on production hardware. Those extra research privileges do not become available to consumer devices.

Tools can reach system processes and survive a restart

The technical documentation describes running code with platform-level privileges, debugging system processes, starting services at boot and retaining research content across restarts. Researchers can also personalize and restore custom kernel caches.

Apple’s 2023 explanation of the program highlighted a practical benefit: researchers can continue working on an updated device after a reported vulnerability is patched. Access for investigation need not disappear with the particular bug that was fixed.

Research-device labels appear during boot and in the Lock Screen and Settings. These visible distinctions help prevent someone from mistaking the device for an ordinary consumer iPhone.

Experience on other platforms can qualify

The current eligibility criteria accept a proven record of finding security issues on Apple or other modern platforms. Applicants must meet the country or region and age requirements, and must not currently work for Apple or have done so within the past 12 months.

Apply with an Apple Account by October 30, 2026. Organizations must identify everyone who needs device access and have an authorized representative apply. Supply is limited and applications are reviewed.

A research loan comes with a defined scope

Apple retains ownership under a renewable 12-month loan. The device must stay at the participant’s premises, be used only by authorized people, and cannot serve as a personal or daily-carry phone. Apple Pay and third-party apps are outside the program’s research scope.

Vulnerabilities found or validated with the SRD must be reported promptly. A bounty is subject to a separate assessment. The Apple Security Bounty guidelines require a complete, actionable report with reliable reproduction, and reward eligibility goes to the first qualifying report for an issue.

A report needs a clear account of observed and expected behavior, plus a working exploit or reliable proof of concept and the necessary reproduction details. Public disclosure before Apple releases the fix and security advisory makes a report ineligible for a reward.

The SRD supplies access for investigation. Receiving a device or submitting a finding does not, by itself, earn a bounty.
