Do You Still Need Time Machine If You Use iCloud on a Mac?

A photo shows up on your Mac and in iCloud, yet the full-resolution original is missing from your Time Machine backup. What else does iCloud leave out?

Do You Still Need Time Machine If You Use iCloud on a Mac?
TLDR
  • Signing in to iCloud does not create a Time Machine-style backup of your Mac’s applications and user environment.
  • Download cloud-only originals before including them in a local backup.
  • Migration Assistant can transfer apps, accounts and settings from a Time Machine backup to a new Mac.

An iCloud subscription does not replace a Mac backup

Yes, a separate backup such as Time Machine still serves a purpose if you want older copies of Mac files or a source for transferring applications and accounts. Apple’s Mac backup guide describes Time Machine backups separately from syncing and storing content with iCloud.

The name “iCloud Backup” can cause confusion here. Apple lists iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro as its device backup targets. Turning on iCloud Drive or Photos on a Mac is not the equivalent of enabling that whole-device backup.

Keeping devices in agreement and retaining a copy from before a change are different jobs. That is why both services can belong in the same setup.

Visible in Finder does not always mean downloaded

Storage optimization can leave full-size originals only in iCloud. Apple’s photo library restoration guide explicitly says Time Machine may not have backed up originals when Mac storage was optimized. A larger backup disk alone does not fix that.

  • Photos: In Photos → Settings → iCloud, choose Download Originals to this Mac. Full-size local copies require enough storage.
  • iCloud Drive: Control-click a file or folder in Finder and choose Download Now. Use Keep Downloaded for items that should remain local even with Optimize Mac Storage enabled.

Let the downloads finish before making the backup. For selected material, Apple also documents copying iCloud Drive files and pasting them into a separate location. Keep Downloaded maintains a local copy; it does not itself create a second backup.

If a photo library lives on an external drive, choose a separate backup destination. Apple advises against putting the library and its Time Machine backup on that same external device.

A synced deletion is still a deletion

Deleting an iCloud Drive file on iCloud.com also removes it from devices with iCloud Drive enabled. Seeing a document on two Macs therefore does not mean you have two independent historical copies.

iCloud does provide a recovery window: deleted Drive files are recoverable for 30 days unless permanently removed sooner. That is useful protection, but it is separate from restoring a version retained in a Time Machine backup.

If you only want to free local space, Remove Download is a different action from deleting the file. It leaves the original in iCloud. Download that original again before expecting it to appear in a new local backup.

Check completion, then use the backup for migration

Connect a storage device and open System Settings → General → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk. Apple recommends at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity: ideally 2TB or more for a 1TB Mac.

Setup may ask to erase the selected device, so check its existing contents first. If you encrypt the backup, retain the password needed for restoration. Run Back Up Now, then check the latest completed backup’s date and time in the Time Machine menu.

On the new Mac, Migration Assistant lets you select a Time Machine backup and choose applications, accounts, files and settings to transfer. The migration does not replace the new Mac’s operating system.

The practical sequence is to locate the originals, download the ones you need, and confirm a completed backup. Extra iCloud capacity does not perform those steps for you.
