ADP vs Gusto vs Paychex: Pricing, Fees and Best Fit

Gusto publishes its full price. ADP and Paychex require quotes. Compare payroll scope, fee transparency and the business size each provider fits best.

ADP vs Gusto vs Paychex: Pricing, Fees and Best Fit
TLDR
  • Gusto is the best default for a small business that wants a known price before a sales call.
  • ADP RUN fits multi-jurisdiction payroll and businesses expecting more formal HR support.
  • Paychex fits owners who value service options and a broader payroll, HR, benefits and insurance relationship—but both ADP and Paychex require a written quote.

ADP, Gusto and Paychex are often placed in one comparison table even though they sell differently. Gusto publishes a checkout price. ADP RUN and Paychex Flex sell packages through customized quotes. That difference changes how a buyer should compare them.

Prices and plan structures were checked on October 4, 2026. Promotional months are excluded.

A quoted plan is not automatically expensive, but it prevents a fair comparison until every recurring and event-based fee is written down. Ask for the post-promotion price, per-payroll charges, year-end forms, additional states, corrections, setup, time tracking and termination terms.

Gusto wins straightforward small-business payroll

Simple covers single-state payroll. Plus adds multi-state payroll, next-day direct deposit, time tracking, PTO, scheduling and workforce costing. The predictable invoice and approachable onboarding make Gusto the strongest choice for a conventional five-to-25-person company.

The boundary is operational complexity. Users managing many entities, sophisticated costing or hundreds of employees repeatedly describe outgrowing Gusto’s simpler structure and support model.

ADP RUN wins when payroll complexity arrives early

ADP offers Essential, Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro packages. Its documented scope includes payroll taxes, multi-jurisdiction operation and progressively broader hiring and HR support. A two-state employee whose wages must be allocated by jurisdiction is the kind of case where buyers report ADP solving a problem a simpler product could not.

The tradeoff is quote opacity and a contract that may contain per-run or add-on costs. Demand a sample invoice using the company’s actual payroll frequency and states.

Paychex wins when service breadth matters

Paychex combines payroll with HR, benefits, training and insurance services, with optional specialist support. That breadth is useful when the owner wants fewer vendors. It also makes the quote harder to compare with software-only pricing.

Start with Gusto unless the company can name the complexity that requires ADP or Paychex. If it can, compare written quotes rather than sales-demo promises.
