Firefox Smart Form Fill: Use a Resume Tab to Help Fill an Application
A saved address fills only a few boxes on a job application, and the rest still ask about your work history. How much can Firefox 158 fill from the resume open in the next tab?

- Firefox 158 adds Smart Window form suggestions based on relevant open tabs, such as a resume beside a job application.
- You select the source tabs and review or edit suggested entries. Saved-address autofill continues to work through its existing on-device path.
- Availability is limited to English locales in the US and Canada, with gradual rollout and form-specific requirements.
Let Firefox suggest entries, then decide what to apply
If your resume is already open while you complete a job application, Firefox can use that tab to suggest entries for the form. The capability arrived in the Firefox 158 release on October 13. Smart Form Fill is rolling out to English locales in the US and Canada.
Mozilla’s form-filling guide uses an application and a resume or profile in another tab as its example. The feature looks for information relevant to the fields, extending beyond the name and address you may already have saved.
- Open the application in Smart Window, with the relevant resume or profile open in another tab.
- Click a field in a supported form and select Fill from sources.
- Review the suggested tabs. Select the sources you want and deselect those you do not.
- Continue to receive suggested entries, then edit anything that needs changing.
- Review before applying the suggestions, and check the completed form before submitting.
This changes the work involved in finding and copying information. It still leaves source selection and the final submission decision with you.
Saved information and generated suggestions take different paths
Regular autofill inserts supported information already stored in Firefox, such as your name, address, passwords or payment information. Mozilla says that data stays on the device during this autofill process and is not sent to an AI model.
For other fields, Smart Form Fill interprets the form and selected sources to propose an entry. The on-device statement about existing saved autofill should not be read as a promise that the entire tab-based AI feature runs offline.
| Feature | Basis for the entry | Your role |
|---|---|---|
| Regular autofill | Information already saved on the device. | Select the appropriate stored information. |
| Smart Form Fill | A suggestion based on the open tabs you select. | Choose sources, then review and edit the result. |
For an application, start by checking that the selected tab contains the resume you intend to use. Then compare the suggested values with that source. A relevant-looking tab and a plausible answer still need to match the application you are submitting.
Updating to Firefox 158 is only one condition
Smart Window is an optional desktop feature and requires a Mozilla account. Form filling has its own availability limits: the dedicated guide specifies English locales in the US and Canada. General Smart Window availability in France does not establish French support for this particular feature.
The form must also be supported. The current guide says Fill from sources appears when there are at least five text fields that Smart Window can help fill. Sites structure their forms differently, and Firefox may not recognize every form or field type.
A missing button can therefore reflect rollout, region or the form itself. Regular autofill, where supported, and manual entry remain available. There is no basis for assuming that every application form gains the feature immediately after a browser update.
The form model is separate from your chat-model choice
Mozilla currently identifies Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite as the model used to detect fields and generate relevant values. Your chosen assistant model still applies to chat. Selecting a different chat model does not mean the form feature uses it too.
If you do not want Smart Window, the Firefox settings guide gives a direct control: open Settings → AI controls and select Blocked beside Smart Window. You can also continue browsing in Classic windows.
The useful change is the connection between a document you already have open and a form that needs its information. Firefox can propose the transfer; you still choose the evidence and approve what the site receives.
