What Is a Security Audit and How Much Does It Cost?

A vulnerability scan, penetration test and compliance audit answer different questions. Define the asset count, attack surface and required evidence before buying.

What Is a Security Audit and How Much Does It Cost?
TLDR
  • A vulnerability scan, penetration test and compliance audit are different purchases.
  • Small scoped reviews may cost a few thousand dollars; manual multi-system tests and formal audits can exceed $25,000.
  • Define assets, credentials, evidence and retesting before comparing quotes.

“Security audit” is not a standard unit. One vendor may run an automated scan, another may manually exploit a web application, and a CPA firm may attest controls against a framework. Their reports cannot be compared by price alone.

Vulnerability scanWhat known weaknesses are visible?Free to $2,000+
Configuration reviewAre cloud, identity or devices set safely?$2,000–$10,000+
Penetration testCan an authorized tester exploit the system?$5,000–$30,000+
Compliance readinessWhich controls and evidence are missing?$5,000–$25,000+
Formal attestationCan an independent firm issue a report?Framework and scope dependent

Scope creates the price

A single unauthenticated marketing site is different from an authenticated SaaS with APIs, mobile clients, cloud infrastructure and separate roles. Count domains, IPs, APIs, user roles, cloud accounts and retests. State whether source code and test credentials are available.

A scan is not a penetration test

Automated tools are efficient at known exposures and should run continuously. A penetration tester chains weaknesses, tests authorization and examines business logic. Buying a branded scan when a customer requires a manual test produces a cheap report that fails procurement.

The report and retest are deliverables

Require an executive summary, reproducible technical evidence, severity rationale, affected assets and remediation guidance. Agree whether one retest is included and whether the vendor issues a closure letter. A list of scanner findings without ownership is not an audit program.

Separate assurance from consulting

The firm helping implement controls may not be the independent party authorized to issue a required attestation. For SOC 2, verify the CPA firm and peer-review status. For PCI, confirm the assessor qualification that applies to the merchant or service provider.

The decision

Start with the required decision: reduce technical risk, satisfy a customer, qualify for insurance or obtain a formal report. Then buy the narrowest service that produces accepted evidence, with scope and retest written into the statement of work.
