Best VPS Hosting for n8n and Self-Hosted Automation
Start n8n on 2 vCPU and 4GB RAM, not the cheapest 1GB VPS. Hetzner is the value pick; DigitalOcean is easier; Lightsail fits an existing AWS account.

- Start a production n8n server with 2 vCPU and 4GB RAM. One gigabyte is a lab, not comfortable production headroom.
- Hetzner offers the best raw value; DigitalOcean offers the easiest developer operations; Lightsail fits teams already inside AWS.
- The backup must include the database and n8n encryption key. A database without that key cannot recover stored credentials.
n8n itself can start on a small machine. Workflows change the requirement. Browser automation, large JSON payloads, binary files, Code nodes and concurrent executions can turn a cheap 1GB server into intermittent failures.
A practical starting specification
| Workload | CPU/RAM | Architecture |
|---|---|---|
| Personal testing | 1–2 vCPU, 1–2GB | SQLite acceptable |
| Small production | 2 vCPU, 4GB | Docker, PostgreSQL, reverse proxy |
| Concurrent/AI workflows | 4 vCPU, 8GB+ | PostgreSQL, queue mode when justified |
| Heavy browser or media jobs | Separate workers | Do not size only the main process |
Hetzner is the value pick
Hetzner’s cloud plans deliver substantially more RAM and storage per dollar than mainstream US clouds. It is the best default for an operator comfortable with Linux, firewalls, snapshots and independent monitoring. Location availability and support expectations should be checked before committing.
DigitalOcean is easier to operate
DigitalOcean’s Droplets, managed databases, snapshots, firewalls and documentation form a straightforward small-developer platform. The premium pays for a simpler control plane and ecosystem, not just memory.
Lightsail belongs inside an AWS decision
A 4GB Linux Lightsail bundle with public IPv4 costs $24 a month and includes 80GB storage and 4TB transfer. That is not the cheapest server, but it provides predictable packaging and a natural path to AWS services and identity.
The missing cost is operations
Self-hosting requires TLS, updates, database backups, off-server copies, monitoring and a tested restore. Back up the n8n encryption key along with PostgreSQL. Community operators repeatedly warn that restoring the database without the key leaves saved credentials unreadable.
The decision
Use a 4GB Hetzner VM when cost is primary and someone owns operations. Use DigitalOcean when simplicity is worth the premium. Use Lightsail when AWS integration is the reason for the server. If nobody will patch or restore it, n8n Cloud is cheaper than an unmanaged outage.
