Hetzner vs DigitalOcean vs AWS Lightsail
Hetzner offers the most hardware per dollar, DigitalOcean the cleanest developer experience, and Lightsail the easiest bridge into AWS. Compare equal 4GB servers.

- Hetzner wins raw compute value by a wide margin.
- DigitalOcean wins for a clean developer experience and adjacent managed services.
- AWS Lightsail wins only when predictable AWS integration matters more than the lowest VM price.
A fair VPS comparison fixes memory, public IP, storage, transfer, backup and region. Comparing the cheapest headline instance from each provider hides most of the bill.
Prices below were checked on October 4, 2026. Hetzner varies by region and tax; all plans can change.
The 4GB class shows the difference
| Provider | Representative 4GB plan | Monthly price | What the price buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | Current shared-cloud equivalent | Roughly $5–13 by architecture/region | Highest hardware value |
| DigitalOcean | Basic Droplet | Check current regional table | Developer platform and documentation |
| Lightsail | 2 vCPU, 4GB, public IPv4 | $24 | 80GB SSD, 4TB transfer, AWS entry |
Hetzner wins servers, not every operating model
After its June 2026 adjustment, Hetzner still offers unusually low shared-cloud prices. It is ideal for self-hosted apps, workers, staging and cost-sensitive production where an operator can handle the stack. Fewer regions and a more infrastructure-first support expectation are real constraints.
DigitalOcean wins coherent developer operations
Droplets sit beside managed PostgreSQL, object storage, load balancers, monitoring and Kubernetes with clear documentation. The platform reduces time spent stitching infrastructure together. That convenience can outweigh a $10 monthly compute gap for a small team.
Lightsail wins the AWS bridge
Lightsail turns AWS compute into fixed bundles. The 4GB public-IPv4 plan is $24 a month. It is attractive when IAM, Route 53, S3, CloudWatch or a later move into broader AWS is already expected. Otherwise, it is difficult to justify purely on VPS value.
Backups change the ranking
Provider snapshots are not a complete backup. Price automatic snapshots, off-provider data copies, managed databases and restore labor. A cheaper VM that requires manual recovery can have the highest total cost.
The decision
| Priority | Pick |
|---|---|
| Maximum RAM and storage per dollar | Hetzner |
| Fastest path for a small developer team | DigitalOcean |
| Existing AWS account and services | Lightsail |
Choose Hetzner by default for a standalone VPS. Pay DigitalOcean for operational simplicity or Lightsail for AWS proximity—not for identical hardware.
