Will Your Ebook Reader Support EPUB 3.4 Webtoons?
A vertical webtoon built with the new EPUB 3.4 roll layout passes EPUBCheck. How do you find out which reader apps will scroll it as one strip?

- EPUB 3.4 adds roll, a layout for continuous vertical comics.
- Readers are encouraged, not required, to support it. File conformance does not establish app compatibility.
- Use EPUBCheck 5.4.0 and test the target reader. Valid existing EPUB 3 books do not need a wholesale rebuild.
A roll declaration does not guarantee reader support
EPUB 3.4 lets a publication declare that its fixed-layout content should form a continuous strip. A supporting reader fits each item to the viewport width and joins the items without visible gaps.
The reading-system specification says readers SHOULD support roll layouts. It does not make support mandatory. An app’s existing continuous-scroll setting is therefore insufficient evidence that it implements this new layout.
As of October 26, the latest public EPUB 3.4 document is the October 22 Candidate Recommendation Draft. Implementation work is ongoing. W3C’s October introduction includes a demonstration in Kadokawa’s Publus reader.
The metadata declaration needs suitable content
This line belongs in the package document’s metadata. It is a fragment, not a complete ebook:
<meta property="rendition:layout">roll</meta> Under the authoring requirements, each spine item must reference a fixed-layout document with defined dimensions. Roll applies throughout the spine; individual items cannot override it to become reflowable.
A comic split across several documents can consequently retain the intended continuous arrangement. This gives the publication a way to express its layout, rather than relying solely on a setting the reader happens to offer.
Validate the file, then open it where readers will
EPUBCheck 5.4.0 supports roll publications and the EPUB 3.4 rules. It also reports outdated features. Those checks answer questions about the file, not the behavior of every reading application.
| Check | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| EPUBCheck | Does the publication conform to the supported EPUB requirements? |
| Target reading application | Does this reader render the strip and navigation as intended? |
For a distribution test, inspect document boundaries for unwanted gaps, rotate the device to check the fitted width, and navigate through the contents. If the distribution channel requires readers without roll support, prepare a format those readers accept rather than assuming validation solves compatibility.
Existing EPUB 3 books do not need rebuilding
W3C’s compatibility commitment preserves valid existing EPUB 3 publications. Adding a layout option is not an instruction to reconstruct a backlist of novels or paginated comics.
Nor should an author change the package’s version value to match the specification’s name. The package requirements retain version="3.0" for EPUB 3.
Keep existing publications where they meet the reading experience you need. For a new vertical comic, treat roll as an authoring option whose usefulness depends on both a valid package and the readers in the distribution channel.
